A cholera epidemic across seven Local Government Areas in Borno State has resulted in 40 fatalities, with state officials reporting over 3,000 cases spread across 139 communities. Between May 1 and May 28, 2026, the disease impacted areas including Maiduguri, Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala, and Magumeri, sparking widespread alarm.
Official figures updated on May 30 showed a notable rise in the health crisis, indicating 37 deaths and over 3,000 infections. This marked a significant jump from reports just three days prior, which documented 27 deaths and 2,715 infections. These metrics confirm an increase of 10 deaths and 285 new cases in a short window. The Maiduguri metropolis serves as the primary hub of the outbreak, housing more than 50 percent of the confirmed infections.
Public anxiety grows as the disease surges, especially in crowded regions lacking sanitary infrastructure and potable water. Health officials are maintaining monitoring and response operations. Meanwhile, the government is advising citizens to prioritize hygiene, consume only treated water, and report symptoms to medical professionals promptly.
