A Federal High Court judge in Abuja, Justice James Omotosho, has ordered that Alkali Yarima, a member of the Boko Haram extremist group, be executed by hanging. The sentence follows his proven involvement in the 2015 attacks on Maiduguri.
In addition to the capital punishment, the court imposed a life sentence regarding the sixth count of the charge, which involved Yarima undergoing training in weaponry and arms management for terrorist purposes. The ruling also included prison terms of 35 years, 30 years, and 10 years for other specific counts within the seven-count indictment.
The prosecution, led by Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, detailed that Yarima, hailing from Borno state’s Mafa region, remained an active member of the banned group between 2009 and 2015. He was further implicated for traveling abroad to obtain militant combat training. Legal proceedings for this case were transferred from Kainji to the Abuja division of the Federal High Court.
Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, affirmed the government’s resolve to eradicate terrorism. He stated that the administration is committed to securing the nation and protecting its citizens from such threats.
