Bill to Strip VP, Governors, and Deputies of Immunity Passes Second Reading
A constitutional amendment bill seeking to remove immunity from the Vice President, Governors, and Deputy Governors has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill, sponsored by Solomon Bob, a lawmaker from Rivers State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was debated during plenary on Wednesday.
If passed into law, this amendment would allow these high-ranking officials to face prosecution while still in office, a move aimed at boosting accountability and tackling corruption.
While supporters argue that the bill will enhance transparency and good governance, opponents caution that it could leave officials vulnerable to politically motivated lawsuits that may distract them from their duties.
As the bill progresses through the legislative process, it has sparked widespread debate on its potential impact on Nigeria’s political and legal landscape.
