Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has advised Nigerian reporters to practice balanced journalism by spotlighting national successes alongside necessary government oversight. During the inauguration of the House of Representatives Press Corps executives in Abuja on Thursday, Kalu emphasized that the media remains a crucial pillar for strengthening democracy and influencing public outlook.
Kalu urged the press to cover both national obstacles and the ongoing initiatives designed to solve them. He framed parliamentary correspondents as essential allies who clarify legislative duties—such as lawmaking and representation—to the general public. Furthermore, the Deputy Speaker noted that ethical reporting is a key component in fostering national unity and trust in government structures.
Hon. Akin Rotimi, the House spokesperson, lauded the leadership for facilitating media access to legislative activities and encouraged journalists to prioritize accuracy and fairness. Following his re-election, Chairman Gboyega Onadiran committed to maintaining the independence of the press while acknowledging the House leadership for providing new benefits, including a health insurance program. The newly installed leadership team includes Christiana Ekpa, Nicholas Kalu, Gift Chapi Odekina, Saheed Badmus, Adah Onah, Nsikak Evans Udoukpong, and Tope Balogun.
