President Mohammed Shahabuddin of Bangladesh has officially resigned from his largely ceremonial post. In a letter sent to the speaker of parliament, the 76-year-old leader explained that declining physical and mental health left him unable to fulfill his constitutional duties.
Shahabuddin, who is often called Chuppu, confirmed his departure during a conversation with AFP, ending months of speculation regarding his future. He had been serving in the role since 2023, having been selected by parliament with backing from former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League.
Pressure for his removal had intensified following the 2024 student-led uprising that removed Hasina from power. Although Shahabuddin faced accusations of maintaining unauthorized contact with the ousted prime minister during a medical trip to London, he has consistently denied those claims.
Prior to the confirmation, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had stated that the government had not yet received formal notice of a resignation, noting that such an action would require strict adherence to constitutional protocols by submitting the document to the speaker.
