African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential hopeful Atiku Abubakar has directed his legal counsel to file an appeal with the Supreme Court to clarify a recent decision from the Court of Appeal. Despite ongoing rumors, Atiku maintains that his path toward the 2027 presidential election remains secure.
Speaking from Abuja via his aide Phrank Shaibu, Atiku called for his supporters and those seeking democratic reform to stay composed. He clarified that the recent appellate court ruling did not overturn the party’s primary elections. He cautioned rivals against spreading inaccurate information, emphasizing that the court’s decision addressed the tenure of state executive committees rather than the validity of candidate nominations.
Atiku highlighted the legal distinction between internal party congresses and statutory primary elections. He dismissed claims that the ruling invalidated his candidacy as a misunderstanding of the law, noting that judicial decisions are limited to the specific issues brought before the bench. He criticized opponents for prioritizing social media narratives over actual legal proceedings and reiterated his commitment to the rule of law. Expressing full faith in the judiciary, he concluded that he is prepared to follow the formal constitutional route to resolve the matter.
