ASUU Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially called off its two-week warning strike, which commenced on October 13, 2025.
The suspension of the industrial action, initially set to end on October 27, follows fresh commitments from the Federal Government to address the major concerns raised by the union.
ASUU initiated the strike after a 14-day ultimatum to the government expired, accusing authorities of “persistent neglect and lack of sincerity” in meeting the terms of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.
Key demands include the payment of withheld salaries, settlement of promotion arrears, release of earned academic allowances (EAA), payment of third-party deductions, and revitalisation funding for public universities.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on October 22, ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed that the decision to suspend the strike was reached during the union’s executive meeting, which concluded early Wednesday morning.
Piwuna stated that the warning strike could have been avoided if the government had engaged sincerely from the beginning. He also acknowledged the Senate’s intervention, which played a key role in the decision to suspend the action.
“NEC resolved that the warning strike is hereby suspended with immediate effect. Should the government fail to address the issues within one month, ASUU reserves the right to return to its initial decision,” Piwuna announced.
