ASUU Benin Zone Threatens Indefinite Strike Against Edo, Ondo, and Delta Governments

ASUU’s Benin zone has set a July ultimatum for the Edo, Ondo, and Delta state governments to implement the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement or face an indefinite strike across seven universities.

The Benin zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a deadline of late July for the state governments of Edo, Ondo, and Delta to enact the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement. If these authorities fail to comply, the union intends to initiate an indefinite strike action.

During a press event held in Benin City on Monday, June 29, 2026, the union expressed frustration over the ongoing neglect of the 2025 accord. ASUU Benin zonal coordinator, Prof. Monday Igbafen, emphasized that members have lost patience after six months of being ignored by state leadership. He stated that while federal universities within the zone have successfully implemented the terms, state-owned institutions continue to lag behind.

The union demands the full payment of the CATA component and associated allowances, alongside all accumulated arrears dating back to January 2026. Prof. Igbafen noted that failing to include these figures in the July salary payments will trigger a total and comprehensive shutdown of affected campuses.

Educational institutions facing potential industrial action include Ambrose Alli University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Delta State University, University of Delta, Dennis Osadebay University, and Southern Delta University. The union leadership accused the state governors of shortchanging academic staff by withholding necessary financial support for the agreement.
