Aston Villa has finalized the acquisition of midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, setting a new club record with a transfer fee exceeding £50 million. This transaction surpasses the £50 million the club previously spent on Amadou Onana two years ago.
The 20-year-old Swiss international initially appeared destined for Newcastle, but he chose Villa as his preferred landing spot after the Birmingham club intervened. Manzambi, who was named the Europa League Young Player of the Season, recorded seven goals in 47 appearances for Freiburg during the previous campaign.
Villa is aggressively pursuing midfield depth following the departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and a long-term knee injury sustained by Onana during the World Cup. To manage financial constraints and meet Uefa regulations, the club is also working on a deal to send Lucas Digne to Paris St-Germain. Additionally, Villa is nearing a £38 million agreement for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, who recently departed his club’s training camp to undergo a medical assessment.
