The Anambra State government is encountering significant opposition regarding its plan to build a second airport, with critics labeling the project a poor use of public resources. This controversy arises after officials previously denied rumors of such a facility in Orumba North Local Government Area, only to confirm in June 2026 that a new airport is indeed part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s long-term economic strategy.
Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, stated that the proposed facility is intended to anchor an Aerotropolis City, serving both Anambra and neighboring regions. However, the plan has triggered intense scrutiny over the current status of the Chinua Achebe International Airport in Umueri. Despite being operational since late 2021, the facility faces challenges with passenger volume, leading experts and advocates to suggest that funds should be prioritized for upgrading the existing terminal rather than constructing another one.
Industry experts, including aviation analyst Chris Aligbe and retired Group Captain John Ojikutu, argue that the project lacks a sound economic justification. They point out that existing airports in surrounding states like Enugu, Imo, and Delta remain underutilized. Furthermore, concerns have been raised by stakeholders such as Kingsley Ubani, who suggests that the decision is driven more by regional politics than economic necessity. With Nigeria’s aviation sector grappling with declining passenger numbers and high airfares, critics maintain that the government should focus on social services like education and healthcare instead of expanding airport infrastructure.
