Public affairs commentator Godwin Omini has cautioned that the results of the 2026 Ekiti governorship contest serve as an alarming indicator for the upcoming 2027 general elections. In a Monday statement, Omini highlighted significant concerns regarding the impartiality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Following the official declaration of Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress as the winner over opponents from the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress, Omini questioned the Commission’s neutrality. He alleged that INEC officials may have assisted the ruling party by moving roughly 400,000 uncollected Permanent Voter Cards into their possession.
According to Omini, these voter cards were reportedly issued to individuals who were not residents, thereby damaging the integrity of the vote. He stated that this behavior suggests a pattern of bias that damages public trust in the national electoral framework, casting doubt on the commission’s capacity to manage future democratic exercises fairly.
