Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is intentionally detaining former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai to undermine political opposition. During a television interview, Abdullahi stated that while his party does not shield individuals from legitimate legal proceedings, the current detention conditions and high bail requirements for El-Rufai are suspicious.
According to Abdullahi, the APC intends to keep the former governor in custody until the 2027 general elections pass. He suggested the ruling party fears that a liberated El-Rufai would provide a significant boost to opposition efforts. Abdullahi also warned that President Bola Tinubu would bear personal responsibility should El-Rufai suffer any medical emergencies while incarcerated. He further criticized the administration, suggesting the Renewed Hope Agenda is merely rhetorical and that the government prioritizes election maneuvering over resolving national issues.
Nasir El-Rufai is currently involved in legal battles concerning financial misconduct accusations brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and wire-tapping allegations initiated by the Department of State Services (DSS).
