Kevin Rideout, a U.S. missionary, has regained his freedom after being held captive in Niger for more than nine months. His employer, the Charlotte-based organization SIM International, reported that he is currently healthy and preparing for a reunion with his relatives.
Phil Bauman, the director of SIM International, expressed relief regarding the release of their colleague. Rideout is presently under the protection of American authorities. The missionary was originally seized on October 21, 2025, near his residence in Niamey by a trio of unknown individuals who escaped toward the Tillaberi region, a territory often frequented by extremist factions.
The kidnapping prompted the U.S. Embassy in Niger to bolster security measures amid concerns about rising abduction risks throughout the nation. While Rideout is reportedly in the care of the FBI, officials have not shared information concerning the conditions of his liberation or the identities of those responsible. Niger remains affected by ongoing conflict involving insurgents linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State fighters near its borders.
