The Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) is urging operators to stop using dilapidated vehicles that lack critical safety equipment. According to the association, adhering to mandated safety guidelines is vital for both operational efficiency and road security.
Remi Ogungbemi, the President of AMATO, noted that many vehicles currently serving the maritime sector operate without basic components such as working headlights, rear lighting, and reflective warning tape. While these items might appear insignificant, Ogungbemi emphasized that they are fundamental for preventing nighttime accidents by alerting other motorists to a truck’s position, especially if it breaks down.
Ogungbemi strongly advised all fleet managers and drivers to verify that these features are operational before sending a vehicle on the road. He stressed that prioritizing these safety measures protects not only lives and cargo but also the industry’s reputation for professionalism. He concluded by reiterating that safety is a mandatory obligation for all participants in the maritime haulage sector.
