The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) is advocating for increased security for telecom assets to help bridge the nation’s digital divide. Gbenga Adebayo, the group’s chairman, emphasized this need during the NITRA Innovative and Scientific Conference held in Lagos.
Adebayo highlighted the industry’s remarkable growth over the last quarter-century, noting that active subscriptions have surged from under 400,000 to over 170 million. He identified the sector as a primary engine for Nigeria’s economic and digital shift, currently providing essential support for banking, education, and healthcare.
Despite massive investments in 5G, fiber networks, and data centers, Adebayo pointed out that obstacles like vandalism, multiple taxes, high energy expenses, and regulatory hurdles continue to impede expansion. He argued that regulators should focus on fostering reliability rather than merely imposing fines, as network stability is frequently impacted by external factors such as electricity shortages and security threats.
The association welcomed the government’s classification of telecommunications facilities as Critical National Information Infrastructure. Regarding Mobile Termination Rates, Adebayo confirmed that the Nigerian Communications Commission is currently performing an evidence-based review to align policies with current economic conditions and promote a competitive market.
