Alan Shearer, the legendary Premier League striker, has publicly condemned Chelsea’s recent eight-million-pound bid for Sunderland standout Granit Xhaka. The former Arsenal captain, who moved to Sunderland for seventeen million pounds, is currently being targeted by incoming Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso.
Alonso and Xhaka previously enjoyed a successful partnership at Bayer Leverkusen, where they secured an undefeated Bundesliga title during the 2023-2024 campaign. Xhaka’s recent performance at Sunderland has been highly praised, as his leadership helped the club secure a top-half finish in the Premier League. However, Sunderland quickly dismissed Chelsea’s initial approach, viewing the valuation as insulting.
Shearer described the bid as bizarre and embarrassing, noting that offering less than half of Xhaka’s acquisition cost for one of the league’s top performers is illogical. Despite the friction caused by this opening offer, reports indicate that Chelsea intends to submit a higher bid for the thirty-three-year-old midfielder.
