The national spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has voiced concerns that Nigeria might fail to conduct general elections in 2027. Abdullahi pointed to systemic issues involving both the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the administration led by the All Progressives Congress as primary drivers for this potential disruption.
Security challenges present another significant obstacle, as widespread instability could prevent voting across large swaths of the nation. Furthermore, Abdullahi highlighted the economic crisis under President Bola Tinubu, noting that pervasive hunger and public frustration might discourage citizens from participating in the democratic process.
Regarding the logistical preparedness of the electoral body, Abdullahi warned that delays in securing necessary offshore materials for INEC could compromise the election schedule. He raised alarms that the commission might be ill-prepared, either by design or through negligence, and expressed concern that the electoral process could be manipulated, leaving citizens with little recourse beyond lengthy legal battles.
