Additional UK regions face drought as fifth heatwave approaches

New heatwave conditions and a lack of rain are pushing more UK regions toward official drought status, with temperatures expected to peak at 35C.

Official drought declarations are anticipated across additional parts of the UK this week as another widespread heatwave takes hold. With no meaningful rainfall in the forecast, the nation faces a prolonged period of exceptionally dry conditions. Temperatures are projected to climb to 35C by mid-next week, exacerbating the pressure on public water supplies.

The UK Health Security Agency has implemented yellow heat health warnings across most of England, remaining active until 21:00 BST on Tuesday. These alerts highlight significant risks to vulnerable populations and potential strain on health and social care systems. Currently, over half of England and the entirety of Wales are already grappling with drought conditions.

Data from the Environment Agency indicates that reservoir levels remain critically low, with five categorized as exceptionally depleted. In some regions, such as Wisley, no rainfall has been recorded for over 50 days. Consequently, more than 20 million people are now subject to water usage restrictions, including hosepipe bans, as utility companies struggle to manage high demand.

Meteorologists expect this coming heatwave to set new records, potentially marking the fifth such event this year. As dry weather persists, the situation continues to intensify, impacting agricultural output and local infrastructure across the country.
