The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially prohibited its state chapters from managing legal matters or retaining counsel without explicit authorization from the national leadership. National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi announced that all legal papers served to state offices must be immediately redirected to the National Legal Adviser at the party’s Abuja headquarters.
This policy change arrives amid heightened political tensions as the 2027 general elections approach. The national body identified instances where local chapters accepted court filings and hired legal representation without informing the party’s central authority. The ADC constitution stipulates that the National Legal Adviser is the sole entity permitted to appoint attorneys or initiate litigation on behalf of the organization.
State-level officials are now strictly barred from acknowledging or maintaining possession of legal documents. Furthermore, the party declared that service at the state level will not be considered valid unless specifically mandated by a court order. Any deviation from these protocols, such as unauthorized legal hiring, may result in disciplinary measures for the responsible party members.
