The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Federal Government to shift its focus from celebrating rescue missions to proactively stopping kidnappings. The party asserts that true national security is defined by the ability of citizens to travel, learn, and live without the threat of abduction.
While the ADC praised the recent liberation of hostages in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after nearly two months, they pointed out that similar urgency is needed for victims still held in Borno State and Kaiama, Kwara State. Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, expressed relief for the families of the released victims but emphasized that the government must not allow these individual successes to mask the ongoing crisis.
The party argued that the current administration under President Tinubu has allowed insecurity to become a normalized aspect of daily existence, which severely hinders economic stability and public trust. The ADC stressed that measuring progress solely through rescue operations is insufficient. Instead, they urged the government to implement long-term strategies, including enhanced intelligence gathering and better coordination among security agencies, to address the underlying causes of criminal activity.
According to the statement, no victim should be neglected simply because their case lacks widespread media coverage. The ADC maintained that the government must demonstrate the same commitment to every abducted Nigerian as it did for the Oriire victims, ensuring that every citizen is safely returned to their home.
