The Accord Party has formally requested the European Union to observe the political environment in Osun State, seeking diplomatic support to ensure a secure and fair governorship election this Saturday. In an August 12, 2026, letter sent to Gautier Migot, the head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, the party expressed deep concerns regarding recent instability.
National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem alleged that the state is currently facing significant unrest, reporting that 29 people have died in politically motivated violence. Furthermore, Mgbudem noted that over 60 Accord Party members and supporters have been detained in Nasarawa State and Abuja. He criticized the perceived bias of federal security agencies, arguing that these actions undermine public trust in the electoral process.
The party also highlighted instances of harassment and intimidation targeting its supporters. Specifically, Mgbudem pointed to allegations involving Senator Francis Fadahunsi, who purportedly encouraged violence against Accord members—a claim the senator has previously refuted. The Accord leadership is now calling on the EU to utilize preventive diplomacy to lower tensions and ensure a balanced environment for all participating candidates. They emphasize that international attention is crucial for maintaining a democratic process where voters’ choices dictate the final result.
