Abuja Lawyer Urges IGP to Tackle Political Violence in Osun

Abuja attorney Pelumi Olajengbesi has petitioned the IGP to address rising political killings in Osun State, demanding the redeployment of the state’s police chief and a tactical intervention to ensure election security.

Pelumi Olajengbesi, a lawyer based in Abuja, has formally petitioned Inspector General of Police Tunde Disu to intervene in the escalating political violence across Osun State. During his visit to the Force Headquarters on Thursday, the attorney highlighted that the ongoing attacks by political thugs threaten public safety and the integrity of the upcoming August 15 governorship election.

Olajengbesi explicitly criticized the Osun State Police Command for failing to act despite multiple reports, subsequently calling for the immediate transfer of the state’s Police Commissioner. He argued that the current leadership has fostered an environment of impunity, leading to significant loss of life, including the tragic death of fourteen-year-old Ezekiel Olapade in Ilobu.

The petition outlines several key demands, including a thorough investigation into all documented acts of political violence and the arrest of perpetrators regardless of their political ties. Furthermore, the lawyer called for an increase in police personnel in volatile areas, a complete overhaul of the state’s security strategy, and a directive ensuring law enforcement remains strictly neutral throughout the election cycle. He emphasized that the police have a constitutional mandate to protect citizens and must act now to restore public trust and prevent further bloodshed.
