Abuja Court Directs EFCC to Apprehend Estate Agent Rebecca Omokamo

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ordered the EFCC to arrest and produce Abuja estate agent Rebecca Omokamo in court after she failed to attend her fraud and money laundering trial, citing a dispute over her alleged self-imposed house arrest.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has instructed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to take estate agent Rebecca Omokamo into custody and present her for trial. Omokamo faces multiple charges, including land fraud, forgery, and money laundering. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik issued the directive following the defendant’s failure to appear for her scheduled court date.

During the session, defense attorney Christopher Oshomeghie, SAN, argued that his client remained indoors for 23 days due to an EFCC siege at her home, claiming she feared for her safety. However, prosecutor Benedict Ubi contended that Omokamo was effectively under self-imposed house arrest to avoid complying with a court-ordered interim forfeiture of a disputed property. Ubi further alleged that the defendant violated her administrative bail conditions by frequently traveling outside the court’s jurisdiction.

While the defense claimed armed agents were preventing movement, the prosecution stated that the defendant possessed the keys to the apartment and was obstructing official duties. After the defense counsel acknowledged that Omokamo held the keys, the court ordered the commission to produce her for the next hearing scheduled for July 23, 2026.

Omokamo, alongside co-defendants including Homadil Realty Limited and Rychado Homes Limited, is accused of defrauding victims of over N500 million between 2023 and 2024. The charges allege the group used forged land documents to deceive buyers, including a 79-year-old widow. Justice Abdulmalik also scheduled a separate civil matter regarding the forfeiture of the contested property for October 15, prioritizing a pending joinder application.
