Abelardo de la Espriella, candidate supported by Trump, claims narrow victory in Colombia

Political outsider Abelardo de la Espriella has narrowly won Colombia’s presidential election, signaling a major policy shift toward a security-focused military crackdown on crime.

Initial tallies show right-wing political newcomer Abelardo de la Espriella has secured a narrow win in the Colombian presidential race. This result suggests a major pivot in the nation’s approach to persistent internal violence and armed conflict. Endorsed by Donald Trump, Espriella ran on a platform prioritizing a military-led offensive against organized crime, drug cartels, and illegal militant groups.

With over 99% of ballots counted, Espriella held 49.7% of the vote compared to 48.7% for left-wing challenger Iván Cepeda, a key associate of current leader Gustavo Petro. Petro has contested these preliminary results, citing unsubstantiated claims of irregularities and requesting a full audit of the voting systems.

Known by the moniker El Tigre, the businessman and lawyer has no previous experience in public office. His campaign emphasized strict security measures, including the potential construction of large jungle-based detention centers and an end to current government negotiations with illegal factions. His victory has been welcomed by regional right-wing figures, including Javier Milei of Argentina, and marks a broader trend of political shifts toward the right across Latin America due to public anxiety over safety.
