Segun Odegbami, serving as a Sports Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has issued a formal call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to halt upcoming elections for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Drawing on over 50 years of experience as a player, captain, and administrator, Odegbami argues that the current structure of Nigerian football is failing to reflect the country’s immense talent.
Odegbami contends that the administration of the game has been stagnant for two decades due to flawed decision-making and a lack of transparency. He specifically criticizes the electoral process, claiming that results are often predetermined and conducted in a manner that invites corruption while excluding qualified candidates. He further asserts that the current legal status of the federation is questionable, noting that existing court judgments regarding the organization’s structure have been largely ignored.
To address these systemic issues, the former national team captain plans to present documentation to the civil courts for legal scrutiny. He aims to challenge the interpretation of FIFA’s influence over internal affairs, the role of government funding, and the equity of current representation. Ultimately, Odegbami calls for a temporary suspension of the election process to allow for a necessary restructuring that could restore stability and growth to the sport in Nigeria.
