Initially, it appeared that Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke had managed to navigate potential federal interference from President Bola Tinubu. This assessment stemmed from the Governor’s strategic backing of the President’s own re-election campaign after failing to switch his allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
For some time, President Tinubu maintained a neutral public posture, treating the contest between Governor Adeleke and the APC candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, as a local concern. However, recent developments suggest that this detachment has faded. The APC in Osun, led by Gboyega Oyetola, has remained deeply hostile toward the incumbent, effectively blocking his previous attempts to join their party and forcing him to pivot to the Accord Party. With the weight of his incumbency and the influence of his family, including musician Davido, Adeleke has revitalized the Accord Party’s campaign.
The atmosphere in Osun has grown increasingly chaotic, marked by rising violence and allegations of federal intervention. Observers note a shift as the APC seems intent on securing the state through the full mobilization of its national leadership. High-profile figures and former governors have descended on Osogbo to support Oyebamiji, while the Adeleke administration faces significant pressure, including the arrests of top officials like Teslim Igbalaye and Mayowa Adejoorin, along with a temporary freeze of state accounts by the EFCC.
Although President Tinubu intervened to reverse the account freeze following public backlash, the intensity of the struggle remains high.
