Irish athlete Kate O’Connor is currently in second place during the women’s heptathlon at the European Athletics Championships held in Birmingham. Following a strong morning session, the 25-year-old is trailing leader Adrianna Sulek-Schubert of Poland by just one point, with the Polish competitor holding 2135 points. Germany’s Sophie Weissenberg holds the third position with 2074 points, closely followed by Switzerland’s Annik Kalin.
O’Connor began her campaign with a personal best in the 100m hurdles, clocking 13:30. She continued her momentum in the high jump, clearing 1.86m to set another personal record. The competition continues this evening with the shot put and the 200m event. In other track news, Andrew Coscoran advanced to the men’s 1500m final after a fourth-place finish, while Cathal Doyle filed an appeal following a fall during his heat. Both the Irish men’s and women’s 4x400m relay squads failed to advance to the finals.
