President Bola Tinubu has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission and various security branches to facilitate a secure and transparent governorship election in Osun State. He emphasized the necessity of preventing agitators from causing disturbances during the voting process.
Scheduled for August 15, 2026, the election features 15 candidates vying for the office. Key contenders include the current governor, Ademola Adeleke representing the Accord Party, the All Progressives Congress nominee Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, and Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress.
Through his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President encouraged citizens to fulfill their civic obligations peacefully while guaranteeing their safety. He specifically instructed the Inspector-General of Police and security commanders to provide robust protection at all polling stations. Tinubu noted that this final off-cycle election serves as an indicator of the commission’s readiness for the 2027 general elections, insisting that the results must accurately represent the collective choice of the electorate.
