The United States Consulate General in Lagos has officially welcomed Brandon Hudspeth as the new Consul General. A seasoned diplomat from the Senior Foreign Service, Hudspeth is beginning a three-year term as the primary American representative for several Nigerian states, succeeding Rick Swart, who retired in July 2026.
This role represents a homecoming for Hudspeth, who previously worked in Lagos as the Political-Economic Section Chief between 2020 and 2022. During his initial stint, he was deeply involved in initiatives regarding trade, security, and governance. Expressing his enthusiasm for the return, Hudspeth noted the significant potential of the partnership between the two nations, emphasizing his commitment to fostering innovation, expanding bilateral investments, and strengthening collaboration within the tech and creative sectors.
Hudspeth brings over two decades of international diplomatic experience to the role. His background includes serving as Deputy Chief of Mission in Namibia and as Director of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement in the Philippines. He has also held various assignments across Mali, Cuba, Afghanistan, and within the Department of State in Washington, D.C.
A Texas native, the Consul General holds a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College, alongside master’s degrees from Harvard University and the National Defense University. The Lagos Consulate remains a vital hub for American interests, overseeing services for 17 southern states and supporting advancements in health, security, and cultural exchange.
