UFC Titleholder Mackenzie Dern Credits Poker for Combat Success

UFC champion Mackenzie Dern reveals how learning the patience and psychological strategy of Texas hold’em poker transformed her fighting style and helped her secure her current title.

Mackenzie Dern has secured 16 victories throughout her 21-fight professional mixed martial arts career. For a significant duration, the American-Brazilian fighter struggled with a lack of composure that often hindered her progress inside the Octagon. Despite a promising start after her 2018 debut, where she won six of her first seven bouts, a mid-career slump involving four losses in six matches delayed her championship aspirations.

Dern acknowledges that she previously functioned as an emotional fighter, often abandoning her technical strategy once a few strikes landed. However, a transition in her recreational habits during 2024 sparked a shift in her professional performance. By playing no-limit Texas hold’em poker, she developed skills in patience, emotional regulation, and opponent analysis. Since adopting this hobby outside of her training camps, she has achieved three consecutive victories, including a win over Virna Jandiroba last October to secure the UFC strawweight title.

The champion aims to utilize these mental strategies during her upcoming title defense against Canada’s Gillian Robertson at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. Dern notes that the psychological discipline required to read poker opponents and calculate risk-reward scenarios mirrors the tactical needs of professional fighting. While she recognizes the inherent risks associated with gambling, she credits the game with fostering a more strategic mindset. This evolution in her approach allows her to maintain focus on potential outcomes rather than merely reacting to the immediate chaos of a match.
