Iga Swiatek claimed her inaugural WTA trophy of the year by defeating world number two Elena Rybakina in straight sets at the Canadian Open in Toronto. The 25-year-old triumphed 6-2, 6-3, earning her 26th career title in just over an hour. Rybakina, the Australian Open champion, struggled with unforced errors during the opening set, which allowed Swiatek to establish control. Despite falling behind early in the second set, Swiatek rallied to win five of the final six games, ensuring her return to the top five rankings.
Swiatek acknowledged the difficulty of recent months and the challenges of managing public scrutiny, noting her commitment to game improvement. On the men’s side, Ben Shelton successfully defended his Canadian Open crown with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Brandon Nakashima. This feat marked the first time since 2019 that a player successfully defended this specific Masters 1000 title, and the first time since 2016 that a winner claimed the trophy without dropping a single set. Elsewhere, British player Katie Boulter secured a hard-fought three-set win against Katie Volynets to advance in the Cincinnati Open.
