Filip Nowacki won gold in the 200m breaststroke at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris, while Lauren Cox and Freya Colbert picked up bronze medals for Great Britain.

Teenager Filip Nowacki clinched a hard-fought gold medal in the men’s 200m breaststroke at the European Aquatics Championships held in Paris. The 18-year-old World junior champion surged ahead in the final moments to clock a time of two minutes and 7.70 seconds, narrowly beating Dutch competitor Caspar Corbeau by just 0.08 seconds. Austria’s Luka Mladenovic secured the bronze, while fellow Briton Gregory Butler placed fifth.

This victory adds to a successful period for the Jersey swimmer, who also secured gold in the 200m breaststroke at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games last month. On the same day, Great Britain celebrated two further bronze medals. Lauren Cox earned third place in the women’s 50m backstroke, a race dominated by Italy’s Sara Curtis, who set a new world record of 26.56 seconds. Meanwhile, Freya Colbert claimed bronze in the women’s 200m freestyle, finishing behind champion Barbora Seemanova, who established a new championship record.
