FIFA President Gianni Infantino addressed the recent backlash regarding the potential creation of a private subsidiary aimed at maximizing the World Cup’s commercial potential. Speaking on Wednesday, Infantino characterized the plan as a voluntary opportunity rather than a requirement.
The concept, dubbed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), was introduced earlier this week and met with significant international criticism. Infantino countered this by arguing that current commercial returns often fail to reach the areas of the sport that require investment the most. He described the initiative as a democratic consultation process subject to approval by the FIFA Council and a vote from the organization’s 211 member associations.
According to the FIFA president, the entity is designed to secure untapped commercial value through external expertise in broadcasting, sponsorship, and licensing. He emphasized that this shift would separate business operations from the core governance and development of the sport. Infantino further asserted that the initiative would ultimately benefit fans globally by providing significant resources to transform football in their respective countries.
