The Benue State Police Command has successfully retrieved a newborn baby kidnapped right after birth at a medical center in Gboko. Authorities have taken 11 people into custody regarding the matter.
Spokesman Orchia Aondogwu announced the development on Thursday. He noted that the case began on August 12, 2026, when Aondofa Chia reported that his child vanished from a Gboko clinic shortly after delivery.
Police teams from the A Division acted quickly to initiate an inquiry. Initial efforts resulted in the detention of nine individuals for questioning. Continued follow-up by the police led to two more arrests later that night. Among these was 35-year-old Nguhemen Asugh, identified as the primary suspect. The police successfully recovered the infant from her care and returned the child to the mother.
All 11 suspects remain under police guard as the investigation proceeds. Law enforcement is currently working to clarify individual involvement and determine the extent of each person’s role in the crime.
