During the 2026 International Youth Day observances, youth representatives in Ogun State urged the government to improve structural engagement and foster stronger partnerships. This appeal was issued at the 1st Stakeholders Townhall Meeting and Ogun Youth Dialogue, held at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta.
Olukoyejo Morenikeji, representing the Ogun West Senatorial District at the Nigerian Youth Parliament, highlighted the importance of this timing during a political transition. He specifically requested the establishment of an independent Ministry of Youth Development. He argued that since the state has separated the Sports Development ministry, it should do the same for youth affairs to ensure specialized attention for the state’s large population of students, artisans, and creatives.
Furthermore, Morenikeji stressed that leadership appointments concerning youth issues should strictly involve individuals between 18 and 35 to ensure genuine representation. He also urged authorities to expedite the adoption of the Ogun State Youth Policy 2026-2030, which has already been reviewed by the Ministry of Justice.
Iyanuoluwa Sonde-Ikokoh, representing Ogun Central, noted that the theme of the day, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” highlights the collective desire for quality education and active participation in policy-making. She emphasized that youth should be included in initial decision-making phases rather than being consulted only after policies are finalized.
Toheeb Bisiriyu, an official from Tracka, encouraged young people to take a more active role in monitoring public spending. He noted that civic engagement is vital, as governance data is available to those who seek it, and pushed for increased participation in spaces historically reserved for older figures.
