The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially doubled the prize pool for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) winners, increasing the award from $1 million to $2 million. This announcement arrives as Malawi and Cameroon prepare to face off in the upcoming final.
This financial adjustment is part of a broader trend by CAF to enhance rewards for women’s football. The total prize fund for the tournament has grown by 67 percent, jumping from $3.475 million to $5.8 million. Furthermore, runners-up will now earn $750,000, while the third-place team also sees a significant boost in their earnings.
Each of the 16 participating nations, including Nigeria’s Super Falcons, will receive $150,000 in participation funding, up from the previous $125,000. CAF noted that under the current administration, the winner’s share has surged by 900 percent, climbing from $200,000 to the current $2 million. The upcoming 2026 WAFCON, scheduled to be held in Morocco from July 25 to August 16, will expand to include 16 competing teams for the first time.
