Youri Tielemans has formally apologized to Aston Villa fans after his recent remarks regarding his transfer to Manchester United sparked frustration. The 29-year-old Belgian international recently joined the Old Trafford squad on a five-year contract after United activated a £35m release clause.
During a pre-season media appearance, Tielemans acknowledged that Aston Villa helped him regain his top form. However, he also stated that Manchester United occupies a higher standing in football than Villa. This sentiment did not sit well with many supporters, prompting the midfielder to clarify his position via social media.
In his statement, Tielemans expressed deep respect for Aston Villa and gratitude for his three-year tenure at the club. He admitted his phrasing was poor and offered an apology, promising to be more precise with his language moving forward while wishing the team success. During his time at Villa Park, Tielemans made 134 appearances and recorded 10 goals.
The midfielder, who was part of the Belgium squad at the World Cup, had a difficult final season at Villa due to calf and ankle injuries which limited him to 35 appearances. He described his move to Manchester United as a career milestone he has worked toward for years.
