Voting has officially started in Clacton-on-Sea, with a historic number of candidates competing to represent the constituency in Parliament. A total of 79,785 registered voters are eligible to participate, choosing from 34 different options, which marks the highest number of candidates ever seen in a British election.
A network of 51 polling stations is serving the area, including Clacton, Jaywick, Frinton, Walton-on-the-Naze, and rural locations such as St Osyth, Weeley, and Great Bentley. Participants are required to present valid photographic identification, such as a passport or driver’s license, to participate. Due to the record-breaking list of candidates, voters will use a 90cm ballot paper, the longest in UK history.
The field consists of 12 political parties and 20 independent candidates. Polls remain open until 22:00, and officials expect to conduct the vote count throughout the night.
