Nobel Laureate Dmitry Muratov Declares Victory Impossible for Putin in Ukraine

Dmitry Muratov, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist, argues that victory in Ukraine is impossible for Russia and warns of the heightened danger of nuclear escalation under the current leadership.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov has cautioned that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine carries a significant risk of nuclear escalation. As the co-founder of the now-silenced independent publication Novaya Gazeta, Muratov observes that the Kremlin’s efforts to control the narrative have led to a crackdown on free expression more severe than that of the Soviet era. He notes that thousands of individuals are currently imprisoned for opposing government policies, far exceeding the number of political detainees during the time of the KGB.

Muratov rejects the notion that Vladimir Putin can achieve victory in the conflict, regardless of how it concludes. He asserts that the immense loss of life and the destruction of Ukraine prevent any outcome from being viewed as a triumph. Furthermore, he highlights the frequent mentions of nuclear weaponry in Russian state media, suggesting that the rhetoric surrounding such weapons has shifted from fringe commentary to mainstream discussion.

Despite the domestic pressure Muratov faces as a designated foreign agent, he remains focused on the plight of Russia’s political prisoners. He shared stories of jailed journalists, activists, and musicians, such as pianist Pavel Kushnir, who passed away in custody. Muratov concludes that while fear defines the current political climate in Russia, many citizens continue to show quiet support for those who dare to speak against the state.
