A tragic accident occurred on Sunday night at a three-story residence located at No. 10 Powerline off Omuna Road in Aba, Abia State, resulting in the deaths of two contract workers. The men had been hired by residents to manually empty a sewage pit.
As the workers were inside the pit using ladders and buckets, their equipment failed. A broken ladder caused both men to fall, leading to their deaths. Following the discovery, local police took several tenants into custody as part of an ongoing investigation.
The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has since shuttered the property. Okezie Ezengwa, the Deputy General Manager for the Aba zone, expressed his condolences but condemned the reliance on manual labor for waste removal. He emphasized that the agency prohibits such dangerous practices, noting that residents are required to use certified service providers rather than methods that involve climbing into underground pits and dumping waste into public drains. The remains of the deceased were transported to a mortuary.
