Academic staff at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, previously known as the Federal University of Agriculture in Makurdi, have launched an immediate and indefinite strike. Terseer Abari, the union chairperson, confirmed the industrial action following a formal gathering held on August 12, 2026.
Abari urged university leadership to settle all pending salary obligations so that teaching and research may restart. The union maintains that the administration has failed to honor the full terms of the 2025 agreement between the federal government and ASUU.
Specifically, the university has only issued payments for the Consolidated Academic Staff Salaries and the Earned Academic Allowance. Payments for the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and the Professorial Allowance remain incomplete, with only partial figures provided for early 2026. The union characterizes these outstanding debts as a systemic underpayment of its faculty members.
