The Nigeria Police Force has prohibited political leaders and high-profile individuals from utilizing armed security aides or unauthorized personnel at polling stations and collation centers during the upcoming Osun State gubernatorial election. This measure, authorized by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aims to foster a secure and transparent electoral environment.
As announced by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Ani Iniedu on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ishyaku Mohammed has been tasked with overseeing security operations for the August 15 election. DIG Mohammed will collaborate with other agencies through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
Operational support will be provided by various senior officers positioned across the state’s three senatorial districts to enhance intelligence and respond to potential security concerns. The Force confirmed that comprehensive protection measures are prepared for voters, electoral staff, and observers.
Authorities have explicitly cautioned that any involvement in voter intimidation, ballot snatching, or thuggery will result in immediate legal action. Furthermore, the ban on state-sponsored quasi-security groups and private guards participating in election duties remains in effect. The police have encouraged the public to participate in the democratic process without apprehension, emphasizing their commitment to neutral and professional conduct throughout the event.
