Ayodele Adio, the African Democratic Congress candidate for the Eti-Osa Constituency II House of Assembly seat, has rejected the Lagos State government’s justifications regarding the ongoing waste management crisis. Adio challenged remarks made by the Deputy Governor, who attributed the issue to an unexpected volume of refuse beyond the initial estimation of 13,000 tonnes per day.
Addressing the government’s stance, Adio questioned how an administration managing one of Africa’s largest cities could fail to forecast waste generation levels after two decades in power. He described these explanations as proof of poor planning and a lack of vision. The candidate noted that factors like population growth and urbanization are quantifiable metrics that a capable government should monitor to anticipate challenges.
Adio also dismissed comparisons to other African cities, arguing that Lagos possesses the wealth and talent to establish superior standards rather than accepting mediocrity. He suggested that the current leadership relies on outdated strategies that fail to address the complexities of a rapidly expanding modern city.
To resolve the crisis, Adio called for a systemic overhaul, suggesting investments in recycling, waste-to-energy projects, and improved data collection. He emphasized that the state’s inability to manage refuse stems from a lack of accountability and original thinking rather than a shortage of resources.
