Spotify is rolling out a new feature designed to identify artists created by artificial intelligence, aiming to provide users with greater clarity regarding the content they listen to. Starting in mid-September, the platform will implement an AI Persona badge on profiles that do not correspond to actual human beings.
This initiative follows feedback from listeners who expressed dissatisfaction with unknowingly interacting with AI-generated profiles. Spotify emphasized that a genuine relationship between artists and fans relies on trust and authenticity, which has become increasingly vital as generative technology evolves.
The identifying badge will appear on artist profile banners, bio sections, search results, and within playlists. Additionally, the company stated that these flagged accounts will be excluded from personalized recommendations for users who do not already follow them. The label focuses specifically on the artist’s public identity rather than the technical tools used during the musical creation process.
While Spotify encourages artists to voluntarily disclose their use of AI through an existing credits system, the company will also actively audit accounts to ensure compliance. If a profile is flagged by the streamer, the account holder will be given the option to self-disclose or contest the designation. The badge will indicate whether the disclosure was provided by the artist or determined via Spotify’s internal review.
