Pep Chavarria has completed a major career transition, signing a five-year contract with Chelsea. The deal for the 28-year-old left-back is valued at £16.3m, with an additional £1.7m potentially payable in add-ons. Chavarria expressed his enthusiasm for joining the club, viewing it as a significant opportunity to compete at the highest level.
His journey to the Premier League was unconventional. Raised in Figueres, Spain, Chavarria climbed through the ranks of lower-tier football, playing for local clubs and Real Zaragoza before moving to Rayo Vallecano in 2022. It was not until the age of 24 that he made his La Liga debut. At Rayo, he evolved into a reliable defender, featuring in 125 matches and displaying the grit needed to face elite opponents.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso identified Chavarria as a priority signing following an impressive display against Real Madrid last November. The defender’s arrival provides Alonso with tactical flexibility, allowing him to implement a wing-back system similar to his successful tenure at Bayer Leverkusen. This move also serves to bolster Chelsea’s defensive depth following the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid.
Negotiations between the clubs were reportedly complex, as Rayo Vallecano initially demanded the full £42.4m release clause. However, an agreement was eventually reached. Last season, Chavarria recorded one goal and three assists, proving his value as both a defender and a contributor in the final third.
