For many years, the legacy of Chief Onyeama N’Eke, a prominent Paramount Chief in Enugu State, was preserved primarily through oral history and private family archives. Recently, the National Museum of Unity in Enugu took steps to formalize his historical standing by unveiling a life-sized statue and a dedicated exhibition gallery in his honor.
This initiative was spearheaded by the Murus Association, which represents the descendants of Chief Onyeama’s daughters. They spent four years documenting the life of the leader, affectionately known as “The Lion,” to ensure his contributions were recognized by future generations. The exhibition features personal items, including a motorcycle gifted to him in England during the 1920s, and highlights his influence on regional coal mining, local governance, education, and the spread of Christianity.
Museum Curator Aloysius Duru emphasized that Onyeama’s role in developing the local coal industry and his foresight in bringing Western education to his community were pivotal. The ceremony also featured remarks from Chief Luke Mmamel, who praised the late monarch’s establishment of an Appeal Court and his commitment to community security. Dame Ugochi Madueke, the Enugu State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, pledged support to convert the late chief’s palace into a tourism landmark.
The memorial was made possible through the collaboration of the Murus Association and federal authorities. The project includes a sculpture crafted by artist Bonak, designed to serve as a permanent record of a man who played a crucial role in navigating the complexities of the colonial era while advocating for his people.
