Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, recently alleged that the Nigerian government is continuing to provide fuel subsidies behind closed doors. During a Tuesday interview on the Arise Television Morning Show, the human rights activist asserted that these payments remain hidden from the public eye.
Sowore argued that the administration is not merely subsidizing fuel, but also manipulating the naira’s value against the dollar through undisclosed support. He criticized the government for prioritizing the wealthy through customs exemptions and waivers while neglecting lower-income citizens.
Reflecting on the broader economic impact, Sowore pointed out that the removal of these subsidies has coincided with a sharp decline in the naira’s purchasing power and rising poverty levels. He concluded that while state subsidies are not inherently wrong, the current system disproportionately benefits the elite rather than the general population.
