The Delta State Government has indefinitely suspended the Commissioner for Works (Highway and Urban Roads), Hon. Izeze Rume Reuben, amid investigations into the physical attack on Mr. Simon Mudi, an aide to the government known as Temple. The incident occurred on July 26 at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area. The suspension, announced by Secretary to the State Government Dr. Kingsley Eze Emu, is intended to ensure security agencies conduct an impartial probe into the commissioner’s reported involvement.
Simultaneously, the situation escalated legally as an Effurun High Court ordered the remand of Hon. Izeze following his police arraignment. The state government stated that this administrative action reinforces its dedication to maintaining law and order, regardless of the status of those involved. Human rights lawyer Omes Ogedegbe commented on the situation, noting that while the investigation is necessary, the court’s remand order should not be viewed as a final conviction. He emphasized that the commissioner remains entitled to the presumption of innocence under Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution.
Ogedegbe underscored that while no one is above the law, the rights of the accused must be upheld throughout the legal process. He urged authorities to balance the pursuit of justice with the protection of legal rights, noting that administrative suspension is distinct from criminal guilt and that remand is a legal measure rather than a pre-trial punishment.
