The United Kingdom has become the first European nation to authorize a daily weight-loss pill produced by Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical company responsible for Mounjaro. Known as Foundayo, the drug is designed to address both obesity and type 2 diabetes. While the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has granted approval, this does not guarantee immediate availability through the National Health Service.
Foundayo functions as a GLP-1 medication that suppresses appetite. Unlike Wegovy, which received approval for a pill version in June, Foundayo can be consumed at any time without the requirement of an empty stomach. Eli Lilly plans to seek a recommendation from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to include the treatment under NHS coverage for weight management, though it may already be utilized for type 2 diabetes.
Experts like Dr. Simon Cork and Prof. Naveed Sattar have welcomed the development, noting that the pill offers a convenient and potentially more affordable alternative to existing, strictly rationed treatments. Clinical trials indicate that the tablet, known in research as orforglipron, may assist individuals in maintaining weight loss after discontinuing injectable treatments. As with any medication, users may experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea, and the treatment should be paired with a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
