Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has voiced worries regarding his squad’s physical conditioning ahead of their Premier League opener against Newcastle on August 23. Following a second consecutive pre-season game where the team squandered a two-goal lead, Iraola admitted after a 3-2 defeat to Monaco that his players currently lack the stamina required to maintain his high-intensity style for a full 90 minutes.
While the opening periods against both Leeds and Monaco showcased promising signs—with Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak appearing sharp—the team’s performance significantly dipped as substitutions were made. Iraola emphasized that while his tactical approach demands constant pressing and front-foot play, the squad’s fitness levels are not yet where they need to be. Assistant coach Pablo de la Torre, formerly the lead fitness expert at Bournemouth, is tasked with elevating these standards.
Despite the challenges, there is optimism that the team will adapt given more time. Although some players are returning from World Cup fatigue and others are dealing with long-term injuries, potential reinforcements like Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo are being explored. Iraola noted that his transition to this playing style may be gradual, acknowledging that achieving perfection immediately is unlikely.
